TOURIST er en gruppeudstilling, som kredser om emner som fortællingen, rejsen og ja turisme. Mens menneskestrømmen fra Mellemøsten til Vesten i disse dage forsøges stoppet med alle midler, finder vi på den anden side, at menneskelig cirkulation i form af turisme er i så høj en kurs, at det er ved at være et af verdens hurtigst voksende, finansielle sektorer, som nu overstiger både olie- og bilindustri.

Med dette for øje, har jeg inviteret de tre udenlandske kunstnere, Patricia Esquivias (VE/ES), Jonn Herschend (US) og Lindsey White (US) til Udstillingsstedet Sydhavn Station, da deres praksisser på direkte og indirekte vis synes at relatere til en form for oplevelsesindustri og turisme.

Alle synes de at berøre nogle emner, som præsentation af og reklame for begivenheder, ting og steder af kulturel og historisk af betydning, som vi genkender fra turistbranchen, men som i deres praksis forstyrres af det uhåndgribelige og personlige. Det kommer bl.a. til udtryk igennem White’s fotografier af forskellige subtile næsten sterile, dagligdags- og iscenesatte handlinger og observationer, der bærer et magisk og kunstig præg, som kan genkendes fra reklameindustri, eller Herschend’s videoinstallationer og performative indgreb, som er baseret på formelle, genkendelige strukturer fra vor institutionelle liv, der i sidste ende bryder sammen til stor forvirring for beskueren. Og slutteligt Esquivias’ hjemmegjorte video-fortællinger med fundne udklip og online billeder af historiske og kulturelle begivenheder sammenflettet med personlige anekdoter, der tager beskueren med på en idiosynkratisk og intim rejse.

TOURIST er den første udstilling med de tre kunstnere, som alle mødte hinanden for første gang i midten af 00’erne i San Francisco (US). Patricia Esquivias er født i Venezuela i 1979 og bor og arbejder i dag i Madrid (ES). Hun arbejder hovedsagelig med video og har bl.a. udstillet på Hammer Museum (Los Angeles) og er i øjeblikket aktuel med en soloudstilling på CA2M i Madrid. Jonn Herschend er født i en forlystelsespark i Branson (MO) i 1967 og bor og arbejder i dag i San Francisco (CA). Han arbejder i et krydsfelt som interdisciplinær kunstner, filminstruktør og forlægger og er tidligere modtager af SFMOMA’s SECA-pris og har udstillet på Whitney Biennalen i New York. Lindsey White er født i Tulsa (OK) i 1980 og bor og arbejder i dag i San Francisco. Hun arbejder med fotografi, video og skulptur og har udstillet bl.a. på Contemporary Jewish Museum (San Francisco), ACME. (Los Angeles) og er desuden medstifter af kunstnerkollektivet, Will Brown i San Francisco.

TOURIST is a group exhibition that revolves around issues such as storytelling, the journey and yes, tourism. While the West attempts to stop the influx from the Middle East by any means, we find on the other hand, that human circulation in terms of tourism has experienced continued growth to become one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world. ‎Today, the business volume of tourism even surpasses that of oil and automobiles exports.

With that in mind, I have invited the three foreign artists, Patricia Esquivias (VE/ES), Jonn Herschend (US) and Lindsey White (US) to Exhibition Space Sydhavn Station, as their practices directly and indirectly can be related to a form of entertainment and tourism.

As for all three artists, they seem to deal with topics as presentation and advertising of events, things and places of cultural and historical significance, which we recognize from the tourist industry. However in their practices, the presentation is constantly being disturbed by the intangible and personal. This is among other things expressed in White’s photography of various subtle almost sterile, everyday and staged actions and observations that have a magic and surreal touch like used in the commercial industry. Or in Herschend’s video installations or performative interventions, which are based on formally recognizable structures from our institutional lives that eventually break down to a big confusion for the viewer. And Esquivias’ homemade video narratives with found online video clips and images of historical and cultural events interweaved with personal anecdotes that take the viewer on an idiosyncratic and intimate journey.

TOURIST is the first exhibition of the three artists whose paths first crossed in San Francisco (US) in the mid zeros. Patricia Esquivias was born in Venezuela in 1979 and lives and works in Madrid (ES). She mainly works with video and has exhibited her works at the Hammer Museum (Los Angeles) and is currently on view with a solo exhibition at CA2M in Madrid. Jonn Herschend was born in an amusement park in Branson (MO) in 1967 and lives and works in San Francisco (CA). He is an interdisciplinary artist, film director, publisher and a former recipient of the SFMOMA's SECA Award and has exhibited his work at the Whitney Biennial in New York. Lindsey White was born in Tulsa (OK) in 1980 and lives and works in San Francisco. She works with photography, video and sculpture and has exhibited her work at the Contemporary Jewish Museum (San Francisco), ACME. (Los Angeles) and is co-founder of the artist collective, Will Brown in San Francisco.
